Operations and maintenance of an electric/ pedal- hybrid bicycle

Owning an electric/ pedal hybrid bicycle is a new experience for many.  The steps to care and maintenance and  how to use are simple and important to grasp at the beginning.  As a shop operator I am keenly aware this technology brings  a motorized machine that looks and acts like a bike until I squeeze the right hand throttle grip towards me and the two wheeled bicycle accelerates quite a bit faster than I would pedal.    How fun, how adrenalizing and how dangerous this could be!
Let's check out how a new bike owner is caring for her bike after a few days of ownership.  Sandy is fixing the mirror with an alan key because it loosened up in a fall over and then plugging in the battery for an overnight charge.  In this video she is demonstrating some important care for this new machine.

  • Place the bike under a roof to protect from the weather when not in use.
  • Keep the charger that attaches to the 110 ac outlet in the house inside the house so it is completely dry.
  • Place the female charger end into the battery and out of the weather for 4-6 hours to gain a full charge.  In this case she plugs charger inside the house and the cord comes out the window to the bike battery on the rear of the bike
  •
Keep an eye on the charger to determine when the green light goes on and the red light off showing when the charge is full and the bike is ready to deliver another 50 km of range running on power alone.  It is a smart charger so no worries if plugged in for a few hours longer.  The lithium battery will stop charging and the charger can stay plugged in for  overnight if necessary.   Not true for all electric vehicles and important information to know about your battery and your charger.
